Q: Is there a big difference between standard brass vs nickel plated brass?

A: Hi Reynaldo! Brass cases are the industry standard – perfectly normal, and absolutely adequate for any training, hunting or defensive application. Nickel plating just offers a few extra advantages. These are smoother cycling (and more reliable operation in a semi-automatic), improved resistance to tarnishing, added visibility (making the round easier to see in the chamber), and easier cleanup after ignition (which only matters if you want to handload your empty cases). Really, I wouldn't worry very much about brass vs. nickel-plated cases. What matters most is your firearm's reliability and your skill.

Q: Will this ammunition function properly in a standard Beretta 92FS?

A: Yes sir, this ammo should function correctly in your 92FS.

Q: Do these have a manuf suggested shelf life, and how do they compare to others like Federal Punch. Thanks for your response.

A: Thanks for reaching out John! All ammunition has a virtually indefinite shelf life provided that it is stored correctly. So long as you keep your ammunition safe from moisture, light and temperature fluctuations, you can expect it to deliver when you most need it. For example, we recently sold WWII Canadian military surplus 303 British ammunition that still worked like a charm! I recommend storing ammo in a mil-spec ammo can with silica desiccant packs. Hornady's Critical Defense series ammunition is without question one of the higher-quality lines of self-defense ammunition on the market. It is not on par with the police grade lines of ammo (such as Hornady Critical Duty, Federal Premium LE HST and Speer Gold Dot LE). The primary difference between brands like Punch and Critical Defense is that these rounds' bullets aren't engineered to retain their weight as effectively while penetrating barriers like sheet metal and vehicle glass. But for the average civilian who doesn't anticipate having to neutralize a threat that is taking cover in or behind a vehicle, Critical Defense and Punch should both serve their purposes satisfactorily. I'm confident recommending either to you. (That said, I personally keep Federal's HST ammo in my everyday carry because I prefer the greater peace of mind.)

Q: One of the reviewers posted, " after 6 months of having the ammo in a mag, the red fillers started to come loose and fall out." That post was in December of 2018. Do you know if that is a known issue that happens often or was it a bad batch?

A: Hello Brian! I reached out to one of our connections at Hornady about this. They said they were really surprised to hear that this kind of defect could happen, because their FTX bullet is crimped while the tip is inserted. They also said you would have a hard time even trying to pull one of these bullets' tips out with a set of pliers! That customer's old feedback must have based on a really rare bad batch.
