A: Thanks for reaching out Malarie! Five years is a huge underestimation in my experience. We have recently sold Canadian WWI military surplus ammo that worked just fine. If you purchase factory fresh ammunition like this, it will easily outlive you so long as you store it correctly. That means keeping it safe from moisture and humidity, light, and fluctuating temperatures. The normal temperature inside your home should preserve ammo just fine. You would do well to store ammo inside a mil-spec ammo can (preferably with one or two silica gel packets). A .50 cal ammo can will store approximately 2,200 loose rounds of 9mm ammunition. If you leave it in its 50-round boxes, then it is possible to fit 20 boxes of 9mm in a .50 cal ammo can. In other words, an M2A1 can will hold an entire 1,000-round case of 9mm quite comfortably.

Federal's FMJ bullet is made of lead and gilding metal – no materials that could conceivably attract a magnet. For reference, any 9mm ammo that comes from an American mannufacturer is pretty much certain to have a nonmagnetic bullet. The ferrous bimetal bullt jacket is a Russian quirk. This ammo has brass cases, and it's factory-made – not handloaded/reloaded. You never have to worry about buying black powder ammunition, either. That's something only used by historic firearm enthusiasts.
